How ARCs work on ShelfGlow

ARC — Author Review Copy

Also known traditionally as Advance Reader Copy. Same acronym, broader doorway.

An Author Review Copy (ARC) is a free digital copy of a book — whether it is unreleased, freshly published, or already available — provided by the author to a genuine reader in exchange for an honest, on-topic review.

On ShelfGlow, "ARC" honors its traditional roots as an Advance Reader Copy for pre-publication feedback, while also embracing the modern reality that most indie authors arrive with a finished, published book in hand.

Whether your book is still in the final editing stage or has been out in the world for years, an ARC on ShelfGlow represents the same core exchange.

You (the author)

Offer your work freely to readers who genuinely want to discover new stories. No strings, no pay-to-review, no five-star quotas.

The reader

Agrees to read it thoughtfully and provide honest feedback based on the actual content — the story, writing, characters, themes, and execution.

Who ARCs are for on ShelfGlow

The old guard / purists

Pre-release manuscripts sent out weeks or months before launch day, the way publishing has done it since trade paperbacks existed. We honor that tradition.

New-age indie / self-publishers

Already-published books are welcome and valid. Reviews help refine future editions, build authentic word-of-mouth, and connect your story with the readers who want it.

Complete novices

Just arrived with a finished book and no idea what to do with it? You're in the right place. Offer it as an ARC and let genuine readers help you build something real.

The exchange we expect

  • Reviews focus on the book — story, writing, characters, themes, execution.
  • Reviews are honest. Not "five stars because they sent it free." Not retaliation either.
  • Off-topic or abusive reviews may be moderated by our team.
  • Readers who request ARCs and never review lose the privilege. Accountability matters.
  • Each format (EPUB, PDF, audiobook) is a single-use download. Links expire in 10 minutes — save your file immediately. Repeat downloads require the author's approval.
